OSHAWA – In late April, We Are Oshawa presented a resolution to Oshawa City Council in opposition to the planned cuts to Canada Post. Council unanimously adopted the resolution and forwarded it to other municipalities and our local Conservative MP, Colin Carrie. Colin Carrie responded with a letter to Oshawa City Council in which he condescendingly reminded council that Canada Post is an “arms-length Crown Corporation, and is solely responsible for its operations, including business and financial decisions.” He also points out that two thirds of Canadian households do not receive mail delivery at home and that taxpayers should not be expected to subsidize home delivery.

We Are Oshawa is launching a grassroots campaign called “Childcare: It’s Everyone’s Issue” including a September 6 rally and recently put the call to all federal and provincial parties and candidates in the upcoming municipal elections as an invitation to meet with representatives from the organization to discuss child care.

Inspired by the national Rethink Child Care coalition, We Are Oshawa is planning to assemble over 300 mothers, fathers, supporters and their children at the rally, each representing about ten families on the wait list for subsidized child care in Durham Region. Members of the citizen’s action group, We Are Oshawa, confronted Oshawa’s long time MPP, Jerry Ouellette, outside the $40-a-seat Oshawa Chamber of Commerce all-candidate debate on Thursday morning. The group says it is unacceptable that Oshawa’s 19 year incumbent MPP chose not to show up to the People’s Debate that focused on social issues, such as retirement security and poverty, which was free and open to the public. We Are Oshawa partnered with students to host the People’s Debate which was held at the Regent Theatre on May 29th.

Oshawa City Council joins the growing opposition to service cuts and job losses in our community
OSHAWA (April 29th, 2014) – At Monday’s Oshawa Council meeting, members of the We Are Oshawa Executive Committee, Jesse Cullen and Jim Freeman, presented a delegation asking Oshawa City Council to call on the Harper Government to maintain door-to-door mail delivery and protect good paying jobs in our community. We Are Oshawa, a grassroots, non-partisan citizens’ action group, organized a canvassing blitz on April 12 and 13 which garnered 383 signatures opposing the cuts to Canada Post postal services.
